back the bike lane starts…many times I have moved into the beginning
of that lane only to have motorists cross over the bike lane in front of
me to get to the right hand turn lane.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

right hand turn onto Collwood whether the light is green or not..what adds to
the difficulty of negotiating this intersection is that cars are moving very
quickly (speed limit is 50 mph) in these lanes and as eastbound Montezuma is
uphill, cyclists are moving very slowly. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

intersection, I would signal my intentions and wait for the cars in the right
turn lane to slow down to allow me merge left into the marked bike lane.
Problem was they would never slow down or respond to my signal. What works for
me is to signal my intention to move left and actually make the move without
waiting for acknowledgement from approaching vehicles that they understand my
intention to go left. Then the vehicles would have to slow down to avoid rear
ending me.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

According to the article, the police said "Fudge had moved to the left so
he could continue straight on Montezuma". I would think that means
he moved into the bike lane that is to the left of the right only lane, except
the police also said the driver clipped Fudge "when the motorist started
to make a right turn on Collwood". That suggests Fudge may have been
going straight from the right only lane, and was not in the bike lane to the
left of the right only lane, or that the driver made the right from the through
lane to the left of the bike lane.<br>
<br>
In any case, the most significant factor appears to be... "The driver had
the sun in her eyes, police said."<br>
<br>
The good news is that though he will miss a few days of work, he "is
expected to make a full recovery".<br>
<br>
If nothing else, let's all remember to take extra precautions as appropriate
when riding into the sun.<br>
