I thought you might want to post some warning info to all Cyclo vets<br>
members and other cyclists who frequently ride on Honey Springs Road<br>
as part of their training route whether as individuals or part of<br>
group training rides.<br>
<br>
The shooting incident took place this morning Sunday the 8th of April<br>
2007, on the NAFTA ride (as some of us call it) or the Floho ride (<br>
which is known among the majority of riders) which starts from<br>
Telegraph Canyon (McDonald's restaurant parking lot) in Chula Vista<br>
and heads east towards the 94 and then up Honey Springs. The peleton<br>
usually regroups half way up the climb on Honey Springs Road (about<br>
4.5 miles from 94) by the sign "Welcome to Deerhorn Valley"<br>
approximately a mile or two from the fire station. As we (about 15<br>
riders) were waiting for the rest of the riders to join us at the<br>
regrouping point, we heard someone from across the street yelling with<br>
loud and distinct tone " you f…Mexicans". At first, no one paid much<br>
attention to the person that did the yelling. Then, few second later,<br>
another round of racial insults were heard and a couple of riders were<br>
able to spot someone behind a screen door or window and pointed him to<br>
the rest of us. As the last few riders finally made their way to the<br>
regrouping point and the rest of us were getting ready to descend back<br>
to 94, the person in the house or trailer yelled out "do you want to<br>
die" and immediately followed by gun fire that was aimed in our<br>
direction but was targeted to hit the ground or a tree on his own<br>
property. As the bullet (sounded like a shotgun with a long barrel)<br>
hit the ground we clearly saw a large puff of dust and few leafs from<br>
the tree sprawling to the ground.<br>
<br>
As we moved about 200 yards from our original regrouping point, one of<br>
the rider called 911 to report the incident. As he was on the phone<br>
with the dispatcher (a lot of questions were asked and details were<br>
needed), a border patrol truck was going by and we waved him in and he<br>
pulled over and stepped out his vehicle to investigate the commotion.<br>
He radioed for help and we were told that he had to contact the<br>
sheriff department since he was not authorized to investigate or take<br>
any action without the presence of the proper security force. After<br>
about an hour of waiting and freezing our asses off (fortunately it<br>
did not rain on us) one sheriff car after the other started to roll<br>
in. One deputy after the other started approaching the scene fully<br>
armed with shot guns, pistols, hand cuffs, tear gas canisters and<br>
batons. After almost 90 minutes from the time the incident was<br>
reported, one deputy asked us to take shelter behind the police and<br>
border patrol cars since the occupants of the house or trailer are<br>
coming out. Two middle aged men were asked to lie on the ground (in<br>
the middle of Honey Springs Road) with hands above their heads and<br>
legs spread wide as they came out of the house. They were handcuffed<br>
and taken to one of the police cars. <br>

Thirty minutes later, one deputy asked us to go back to our original<br>
regrouping point and said an officer will be asking some of us to<br>
make a statement regarding the shooting. As we were waiting and<br>
shivering under the cloudy skies of Hamul, we saw the officers bring<br>
one long barreled shotgun and a hand pistol from inside the house. Two<br>
other officers were searching the front yard for empty cases and any<br>
other evidence. Fifteen minutes later, a sergeant with the sheriff<br>
department came to giver us a case number and to tell us that they<br>
confiscated all weapons they found on the property and asked us to<br>
send the department a letter of thank you for their efforts. <br>
<br>
Fortunately, none of us were hit or even came close to being hit.<br>
However, the shooter could have easily missed his intended target and<br>
one or more of us could have been hit. <br>
<br>
We were given contact info in order to follow up on the case. Some of<br>
us might be asked to appear in court as eyewitnesses if and when the<br>
two men will be charged with a felony. <br>
<br>
I am not sure if these two men once released, will try to intimidate<br>
and harass cyclists as they go up and down Honey Springs Road in the<br>
future. Who's to say that they will not target cyclists again? <br>
