[SDCBC] Riders on the Nimitz Blvd. and Pt. Loma Blvd.

Although I enjoy participating in a small club ride almost every Saturday
morning, I dislike large clustered group rides, partly because of what Aram
observed. The herd instinct brings out the worst in lots of folks.

What he saw sounds more like a DISorganized ride to me. :)

This evening around 9:30 pm I was on Pt. Loma Blvd., waiting to turn
right onto Nimitz Blvd towards I-8. All of a sudden, a bunch of bike
riders, riding north on Nimitz arrived at the intersection. Even
though it was already fully dark, many of the riders did not have any
lights or reflectors. A few riders crossed Pt. Loma and then the
majority started turning left onto Pt. Loma Blvd. and the "herd"
started following, even though they did not have a left turn signal.
Those that had gone past Pt. Loma Blvd. started turning around and
riding against the traffic and in the middle of the lanes. Cars, in
both directions were trying to avoid the bicycles and luckily no one
got hit (that I saw). There even appeared to be a father with a baby
on a backpack.

If this was some sort of "organized" ride, I hope it never gets
organized again. I've never seen such a bad (good?) example of how NOT
to ride a bicycle, either singly or in a group, and in particular at
night! As a cyclist, I'm ashamed of the blatant disregard of the law
and safety demonstrated by this mob of riders.

Regards,
Aram Perez
