On this topic, 

You might have seen this before, but I think it makes a compelling case for separated bike lanes (second article).  The former mayor of Bagota's comments are particularly interesting.

It occurs to me that unless we can get everyone out bicycling we won't get very far in our efforts, ie the young, the old, the frightened, etc...  Most people on this list probably fall into the die-hard bicyclists category, but it's everyone else that we want riding, as well, correct?
