[SDCBC] Del Mar Blvd/Jimmy Durante Merge.

Thanks for posting, Rob.

I recall that questionable sign's identical twin predecessor being there
through the 1980s and into the 1990s. I am extremely sorry to read that it
has been brought back. I fear the sign may be an unintended consequence of
the CycloVet petition, which I did sign.

We have these high-speed right-side free merges all over San Diego County,
including a nasty one on northbound Carlsbad Bl. (Coast Highway 101 to
everyone else) just before the lagoon on the Buena Vista Lagoon. The City of
Carlsbad paid a $500K settlement to a brain-injured cyclist, but this was
evidently not enough to incentivize them to make the intersection safer
through traffic controls and/or traffic calming.

At the southbound 101 / Jimmy merge, the good news is that timid cyclists,
or those of us who simply do not want to deal with the merge during peak
traffic periods, can always divert to the shoreline route between the old
train station and the old power plant, crossing the tracks perpendicularly
and cautiously, of course. However, this is not practical for a large
peleton, and it is not necessary early on weekend mornings, when traffic is
sparse.

All the best,

John

Dear SDCBCers:
Hello! I recall there had been a petition to ask the City of Del Mar to
do something about the coastal road southbound where there's that sudden
merge from the right with Jimmy Durante Blvd.
On yesterday's ride (Fern Kissel's "Sea Level Century," by the way, if
you're reading this, thanbks again Fern!) I noted a brand spanking new
sign on Coast Highway -- "Bikes Yield to Cross Traffic."
Huh? There isn't cross troffic -- it's a merge. Is THIS the fruit of
the petition?
