Thanks for the note, Kathy. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Sanders, this incident hits close to home because I rode Torrey Pines that same morning and because I caught a stick in my rear wheel about 6 years ago. As I fought to keep the bike upright while skidding to a safe stop, I contemplated how lucky I was to lock up the rear wheel instead of the front.

My heartfelt condolences go to Nancee -- I shall be honored to increase my usual donation to Sierra Club this year, in Sandy's memory.

  I am sorry to have to send this email. Sandy Sanders passed away last night due to an injury he sustained riding this weekend on Torrey Pines Road. Sandy was a good friend to the Coalition, being the Vice Chair from 1993 to 1997. He will be missed.
