I am sorry to have to send this email. Sandy Sanders passed away last night
due to an injury he sustained riding this weekend on Torrey Pines Road.
Sandy was a good friend to the Coalition, being the Vice Chair from 1993 to
1997. He will be missed.

Early this morning, Nancee called me to let me know that Sandy passed away
at 3:17am (on 3/17/08).  We have all lost a very good friend.  I don't have
the words to describe my feelings right now.  

 

Nancee will let me know when a memorial service is planned; and I will let
you know.

I have just learned from Sandy's wife, Nancee, that Sandy will not make it
through the night.  He had a severe injury to his neck.  I don't believe he
regained consciousness.

Hello Sierra Club Bike Section;

 

Today, it was only Sandy and me on the express ride.  We were heading south
on Torrey Pines Road, just past the top of Torrey Pines hill.  Sandy hit a
stick with his front wheel, which got caught in his spokes.  He went over
the handlebars.  When I got to him, he was unconscious.  I gave him CPR
until another bicyclist came by and said he was a doctor.  He took over CPR.
The ambulance took him to Scripps Memorial.  When he left, he had a heart
beat and was breathing.  I was able to contact Nancee, who is in Boston, and
heading home.  She is in touch with the hospital.  Right now Sandy is in
intensive care.

 

It might be best to minimize the number of calls to Nancee as she is in
contact with the hospital.  I'll email everyone as I learn new information. 

 

Please keep Sandy in your thoughts and prayers.
