I contend that it is much tougher to merge left and to position oneself vehicularly in 55mph traffic than in 25 or even 35mph traffic. There is no compelling reason for Pershing to be posted 50mph, and there is no reason the mouths of these two ramps could not be squared.
Alternatively, run a bike lane down the left side of the street or post a "bicyclists take left lane" sign prominently, as a guide to clueless motorists and bicyclists. Think outside the box -- we do not have to accept 1950s road design passively.
