And is it possible that this "courage" is not also needed to pilot a 
motor vehicle?  Is it also possible that this need of "courage" is 
what keeps the average driver from even considering using a bike even 
for the shortest trips?  Is this "courage" available at the local 
bike shop...  can anyone just pick it up?

If not, then I am afraid that this is yet another barrier to entry 
for the average person in San Diego to cycle commuting.

I can't help but wonder if there are any other solutions besides "courage."
