I came upon the accident yesterday morning. I was not a direct witness as
the incident occurred perhaps 10-20 seconds prior to my arrival on the
scene. The automobile driver involved and three other drivers stopped to
provide assistance. I stopped a few car lengths behind the injured bicyclist
for his protection and to direct automobile (and bicyclist) traffic around
the scene.
The bicyclist was fortunately wearing a helmet as his injuries could have
been worse. Two police cruisers arrived, then a paramedic/fire truck, then a
CHP patrol car. I departed before an ambulance arrived. The bicyclist had
plenty of road rash, a profusely bloody nose and was, as far as I could
tell, conscious but only mildly responsive.
I was able to leave a note within the bicyclists messenger bag directing him
to the SDCBC.org website and left my name and phone number (619-549-5396).
If you have any contact with the injured rider, please let me know. I know
how disorienting it can be to have been involved in something like this and
then have the empty feeling of nobody coming to your aid when you've
recovered.
As for the Lane Position issue, this is your typical tapering on-ramp. There
is a bike lane that truncates roughly a fourth of the way up the on-ramp
just as the on-ramp becomes fully separated from Pershing Drive. At the end
of the bike lane is a sign directing bicyclists to dismount and cross the
white-paint-indicated cross walk, then the supposition is to re-mount and
continue in the bike lane on Pershing. It's a poor design and rarely have I
seen a bicyclist dismount and cross at the walk. Incidents occur when riders
attempt to take the lane prior to the beginning of the on-ramp and encounter
automobile drivers--some drivers are aware, some are oblivious.
