John et. al.:  Indeed taking the lane can be a harrowing experience but I 
consider the following thought:

At times, riding in the safest possible manner can require courage...  No one 
said this would be easy.  

I do think it is important to understand the particulars of this exact 
situation, I imagine Jim has ridden Pershing and has some thoughts.
