Amen...some simple stuff if left unaddressed can end up costing a whole lot
more, it does help when you can do some of the basic repairs yourself.
Now go ride your bike.

No there is no need to work on your own bike. However learning basics
will save you time and money. Plus if your in the middle of a century,
or far from a bike shop, knowing how to make your bike work is a plus.
I've seen quite a few people pushing their bikes with a simple flat
tire. I've also been in bike shops when people pull up in their car,
unload their bike and walk it into the shop with a flat tire. Knowing
how to handle a flat, a broken cable, etc. is a good thing. Having drop
your bike off because it's not quite shifting right can leave you
without a bike for a couple days.
