No there is no need to work on your own bike. However learning basics
will save you time and money. Plus if your in the middle of a century,
or far from a bike shop, knowing how to make your bike work is a plus.
I've seen quite a few people pushing their bikes with a simple flat
tire. I've also been in bike shops when people pull up in their car,
unload their bike and walk it into the shop with a flat tire. Knowing
how to handle a flat, a broken cable, etc. is a good thing. Having drop
your bike off because it's not quite shifting right can leave you
without a bike for a couple days.
