[SDCBC] EC qualification by testing only

Hi Serge,

What you are describing sounds much like the engaging learning tutorials that Silke puts together for her job.

This type of learning achieves much greater retention, keeps the student involved and interested.

Is there some sort of carrot, you can imagine, that would help facilitate people taking this type of "exam?"

Best regards,

Eric Converse

I'm envisioning something much more interactive.

Read something, Watch a short clip, read some more, answer some questions, read some more, watch another short clip, more reading, more questions, etc.

And the questions I envision would not just be multiple choice. They would be also include mini projects, like requiring the student to identify along say a 5 mile stretch of one of their common routes where the rightmost lane is wide enough to be shared, or has a bike lane or shoulder, or is too narrow to be shared. Another mini-project might be to stop at red lights in the middle of the lane (regardless of lane width), up at the stop line (if first), or behind the last car already stopped, for at least 50 miles of urban/suburban cycling (not necessarily all in one trip), and then write about the experience. Another mini-project might involve doing a certain number of counter-clockwise (left turns) laps around a block where at least one of the streets is fairly busy, in order to practice negotiation, merging and signaling.

The League of American Bicyclists already has their very
condensed version of the safety info on the web - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdrrxIpQpt4 I know someone has the Effective Cycling video on DVD - Maybe we
can upload that to YouTube? I also don't see the League update/replacement
of the Effective Cycling video "Enjoy the Ride" on YouTube –
maybe we can get permission to post that as well?
I think it wouldn't be too much work to put together a
hybrid computer/onbike class for people…
