[SDCBC] I uttered discouraging words to a potential commuter.

You point out some excellent examples where becoming truly expert may take
considerable time/experience to develop. Your expedient detours are
perfectly fine interim solutions, it's the end-to-end route, not the
doglegs in the middle that I'm talking about. For example, Caltrans still
likes me to go down the Knott Way between Poway and Mira Mesa instead of
using the freeway bridge over the gorge. This adds two steep hills to my
route, but it's still a better route than any alternative.

BTW, lane splitting is the answer to most of your advanced road
challenges. There are plenty of union/divide road situations in thin
disguise. The rightmost lane position that leads to your destination is
not always obvious to the beginner, and is not always comfortable even
when recognized.

For example, congested two-lane roads (Miramar near Scripps Ranch at I-15,
for example) may result in the clearest space between the two lanes of
traffic.
