[SDCBC] Gas prices knock bicycle sales, repairs into higher gear

I'm pleasantly surprised that people I personally know are getting on bikes and commuting to work. Actually, I'm flabbergasted. I've lent out both my Road 1 book and Street Smarts booklet. They are all saying similar things--how much fun it is to bike ride instead of drive, they're pleased to be getting some exercise, and it doesn't take much more time to ride vs drive. None of them are talking about gas prices.
Will they continue to ride their bikes? Or will the bikes end up hanging on hooks in the garage? Only time will tell.

This story is a forgettable factoid - For
many commuters, biking to work is just not an option because not
everyone works within 10 miles of their employer. Then again, if
enough cagers get splattered the first time they take out their shiny
new $5k Trek, it may just change for the better the manner in which
bicyclists are treated and LEOs enforce the Vehicle Code against
negligent motorists who mow down bicyclists.
Personally, I think it is
way too early to have an informed opinion about some blip in the sales
of bicycles based on the price of gas. Once the next corporate
friendly figurehead occupies the Oval Office and suspends the federal
gas tax for the summer months, we won't see another byline about
bicycle sales until the demand for gas under $4.00/gal. as a result of
the election year pandering drives gas up to $200.00/barrel and some
bored writer somewhere writes another story about bicycle sales again.
