Blind spots are a pretty weak argument. You can very well have 2 
cyclists approaching that turn from opposite directions both doing 20 
give or take, giving a 40mph closing speed.

He may be suffering the same issues cyclists do through there, not being 
able to use the freeway. He's probably taking the path as there's no 
alternative other than to go miles out of his way.  Man, this argument 
sounds familiar. :)
