The voice of cynicism says that drunk driving is still taken too lightly. Isn't that how this whole thread got started? This woman got off lightly. She will be out of jail within a few years. The family and friends of the murdered cyclist have been sentenced to a life time of grief and anger.
With all due respect to the many thanks to the efforts of MADD, we still have a long way to go on drunk driving. We'll not see any tangible progress in DVDs, GPSes, PDAs, mobile phone, eye-liner, Happy Meals, etc. in our lifetimes.
What exactly would it take to get people to stop drinking and driving? The first step would be to treat the crime just like any other first-degree capital murder. When people start being executed for killing someone under the influence, then we may start to see changes. Until then, I don't hold out much hope. The automakers would resist any attempt to put mandatory breath analyzers in the cars. For some, the culture of drinking and drinking will only die when they are laid into their graves.
