Good news for the water, and for bicyclists!

>From Mayor Jerry Sanders:

This morning, I announced that the City will be stepping up its street
sweeping efforts to help reduce pollution entering San Diego Bay, Mission
Bay and the ocean off La Jolla Shores.

This effort is the centerpiece of a pilot study that will provide more
frequent street sweeping in the developed areas of our City that drain into
these waters. The study is intended to run for the next 24 months and will
be implemented in three phases.

Phase I begins on April 1, 2008 and will include the communities of Greater
North Park, Normal Heights, Kensington-Talmadge, City Heights, Logan
Heights, and Memorial.

Phase II begins on April 14, 2008 and will include the Clairemont Mesa,
Kearny Mesa, and Linda Vista communities.

Phase III will begin on September 2, 2008 and will include the La Jolla,
University, Torrey Pines, and Torrey Hills communities.

This new effort is part of my broader commitment to preventing pollution in
our City's storm drain system. In each of the two years I've been in office
I have provided - and that the City Council has adopted - balanced budgets
that gave more money to meeting new obligations under the City's Storm Water
Runoff Permit issued by the state. I will add more money for that purpose in
the next fiscal year.

Keeping our storm water drainage system free of pollutants is an important
effort for all of us. We need to do our part - making sure that we don't
allow automotive fluids, pet waste or other contaminants to wash into the
gutters near our homes. We also need to pay attention to the new street
sweeping schedules that will be coming with this pilot study.

Many of the neighborhoods included in the pilot study will see new sweeping
routes and much more frequent sweeping of their streets. There will be new
parking restrictions for the hours when sweeping will occur and I know that
may cause an inconvenience for some of us. There will be ads in community
newspapers and door hangers as we draw closer to the start dates for each
phase of the program.

I want to encourage everyone to pay close attention to this new information
and to understand that any slight personal inconvenience is more than made
up for by the benefits coming from preventing pollution of our beaches, bays
and other waterways.
