IMO, this is one of the most under-rated and most useful bike
handling skills on the list. Has saved my bacon more times than
I could count.
A few years ago, I was descending from Bogus Basin (Boise, ID)
at 40mph, approaching a cattle guard that was three dimensional -
old and clipped by snow plows one too many times. Six+ feet
across and high to low point was easily 12 inches. The three riders
in front of me screeched to a halt and were trying to figure out
how to cross it, I just hopped it at 40mph and flew on down the hill.
IMO, if you can't hop a cinder-block you shouldn't be riding at night.
