Kathy Keehan, Rob Leone, and I attended last night's Leucadia Coast Highway 101 streetscape planning workshop, at which the focus was on traffic calming and road design. Two of the five Encinitas city council members showed up, as well.
There is extremely strong community support for slowing traffic and for accommodating pedestrians and bicyclists. The consultant appears to support one main travel lane and one bike lane in each direction, but I am going to point out the dangers of door zones and right hook maneuvers. I still think four slow, narrow travel lanes may work, particularly with some sort of "bicyclists use full outer lane" signage.
The next workshop meets at 8:30 Saturday morning at Encinitas City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan. We shall be bussed at 9:00, presumably to La Costa Av., from whence we shall walk the corridor as a group, which will give me great opportunities to point out the pedestrian-hostile crossings at various points.
Stay tuned for more details ...
