And why can't we have such messages broadcast here in San Diego? Why
don't we have "Cyclist may use full lane" signs in San Diego? Why
don't billboards proclaim the following messages for all to see and
understand:

"Cyclists should expect and demand safe accommodation on our public
roads, just as does every other user.
Nothing more is expected. Nothing less is acceptable."
        Jack R. Taylor

"Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles."
        John Forester

"Same Roads Same Rules Same Rights"
        SDCBC

"Roads are for people, not just for people in cars."
        Jim Baross

All of these things would help lend understanding to motorists and
cyclists who may not understand either the rights of cyclists nor how
to share the road.

This message will not get to the public by osmosis, and apparently
few people read the California Drivers' handbook all the way to page
40 (note, this information used to be on page 68... perhaps we are
finally "moving up" in the world).
