I was riding with the North County Cycle Club on Saturday. About 15-20 of
us were nearly finished with our 50 mile ride, riding in the bike lane in a
pace line. We were on Twin Oaks Rd in San Marcos. I then heard honking
coming from behind, and a large GMC van swerved into the bike lane trying to
hit us while honking. He then pulled in front of us (parking lane, right of
the bike lane), opened his door, and grabbed one of the cyclists. Another
cyclist behind him could not stop fast enough and wiped out. The motorist
started to drive away, but we yelled that we have his license, and it would
be a hit and run. Someone called 911 (interesting, but no-one could get 911
on a cell phone), and a fire truck, ambulance, and several police showed up.
The injured cyclist was taken away by ambulance (looked like some minor
scrapes, possible broken bones, maybe more). We all gave statements to the
police, and there were several other witnesses as well. When we left, the
police were giving the driver a sobriety test.
Not a pleasant scene.....
