[SDCBC] What were they thinking? (Camino del Norte)

"What were they thinking?" That's easy -- CarTrance cares only about moving as many cars as possible onto and off of its freeways, with no regard to the safety or convenience of pedestrians, bicyclists, or sometimes even local motorists. Until this 1950s mentality changes, we are going to be stuck with dangerous high speed merges, diverges, unions, etc. With appropriate traffic calming at the mouths of the onramps, we could do away with those frustrating metering signals which impede the ramps' intended use as acceleration lanes.

The first step is for the cities to wrest ramp interface design away from CalTrans, putting it back under local control, where we can have some impact on it.

I find the new e/b configuration, setup as the w/b configuration was
before the reconfiguration (i.e. merge across two high speed traffic
lanes) more scary because of the increased speed differential. I've only
taken it once, and I am still contemplating how to deal with this new
situation safely. It is on my every-day commute.
