Dear Westways editor,

Thank you very much for telling AAA members about the League of American Bicyclists' certified League Cycling Instructors and their highly recommended Road I and Road II classes. LCIs share my passion for the sport and for the safe and lawful use of our public roads by everyone. Thank you in particular for citing the lawful vehicular cyclist's mantra, "same roads, same rules, same rights," and for quoting John Lotze.

Motorists, in turn, need to acknowledge that bicyclists do have a right to use the road, and that this may occasionally result in a small inconvenience to them, such as when a cyclist needs to claim a travel lane which is too narrow for safe side-by-side sharing. When overtaking a bicyclist, provide a safety margin of at least 3 feet. When preparing to turn right, slow down and merge in behind a cyclist -- if you pull up just past me with your right turn signal illuminated, I do not know whether you plan to wait for me or to right-hook me.

All the best,

John Eldon
