>Aillene Elliott, former Executive Director of
>Hostelling International- American Youth
>Hostels, San Diego Council, died at her home Monday April 14, 2008.
>
>Aillene Werre Elliott was a passionate woman. A
>native San Diegan, she was born in Mission Beach
>in 1927, graduated from Mission Beach Elementary
>and Point Loma High School and attended San
>Diego State University. A lover of sports and
>music, Aillene learned to swim at the Plunge and
>played drums in SDSU's marching band. It was
>there she met a young trumpeter, Clark Elliott,
>who soon became her husband. They were married
>53 years and raised four boys, Albert, Ralph, Carl, and Glenn.
>
>Always an educator, Aillene taught children to
>swim with the Neptune Backyard Swim Club in the
>1950's and 60's (The Neptune Club still meets
>today at the Bahia Hotel.) In 1969, her love of
>teaching children led her to a local non-profit,
>the American Youth Hostels (AYH), where she
>would spend the next 20 years shaping the lives
>of children and leading the organization into its future.
>
>Ardent bicycle rider, Peter Kendall asked
>Aillene to lead a week-long bicycle trip
>sponsored by AYH, now known as Hostelling
>International. Ralph had told Peter that his
>mother would someday take over the organization,
>and she did. When Aillene joined AYH as the
>Executive Director of the San Diego Council, the
>organization had about $200 and operated out of
>a garage. Under her leadership, Aillene grew
>the organization to include four hostels,
>Downtown San Diego, Imperial Beach, San Clemente
>and the Point Loma Hostel, which was named the
>Elliott International Hostel in her honor. She
>recruited thousands of volunteers and membership grew fivefold.
>
>As Executive Director, Aillene would coordinate
>the daily bicycle rides, oversee the large
>community events, and organize bicycle trips
>around the county and overseas. Each week,
>Aillene would print out a newsletter about the
>daily bike rides, upcoming AYH trips and
>membership news from her mimeograph
>machine. Many of the bicycle groups that were a
>part of AYH are still around today. The 'Lady
>Loopers' that included Mary Jessop, June Olsen,
>Ione Inneman, and Marian Thompson, rode every
>Tuesday and they still meet at Christmas
>time. In 1974, Aillene established the
>Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle ride in San Diego
>as part of World Bicycle Week. The 20 mile ride
>that begins at midnight soon became a favorite
>for the San Diego cyclist and is now entering its 35th year.
>
>Aillene led many trips across the U.S. and to
>Europe and Japan. A favorite trip took 25
>bicyclists to New York City and Washington, D.C.
>in a bus adapted by Clark and Glenn to hold both
>bicycles and riders. Hundreds of San Diegans
>participated in the Grand Tour of Europe on
>bicycles with Aillene and AYH. Many
>friendships, and even a few marriages, were formed on those trips.
>
>After retiring from AYH, Aillene still remained
>active in AYH, attending annual membership
>meetings and regional meetings. She generously
>shared her knowledge of the organization when
>meeting with a new board member or staff member,
>providing insights and sharing her passion for
>hostelling. She and Clark became involved with
>two other activities; the Amigos motor home
>traveling and dancing. The couple traveled all
>over the western United States, calling and
>teaching round dancing and square dancing until Clark's death.
>
>Following her passion was Aillene's strongest
>attribute. From swimming, to bicycling, to
>dancing, camping and of course, hostelling, she
>has shared her passion with her family. All of
>her sons followed her footsteps by following
>their own passion: Albert (ACE) loves surfing
>and shapes surfboards; Ralph loves bicycling and
>announces bicycle races; Carl loves music and
>plays the drums in a rock and roll band, which
>led him to meet his wife on the road in
>Michigan; and Glenn loves mechanics and restores
>military equipment in his spare time for the
>City of San Diego Equipment Division.
>
>Aillene's love for San Diego is evident in her
>57 years at the same address in Point Loma,
>where she passed away last week. It is fitting
>that she will join her parents and husband in
>burial at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery in her beloved
>Point Loma. Aillene is survived by her four
>sons, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
>
>Aillene is remembered for her unwavering
>commitment, her devotion and her desire to share
>her passions with so many. Her contribution to
>hostelling is treasured by the local council of
>Hostelling International, as well as the national office.
