The problem is the speed of traffic on that street and the RTOL. I do not see how eliminating the bike lane between the through lanes and the RTOL could possibly improve the situation. This would be a very tough situation for cyclists, with or without any bike lanes. I hope someone on his upcoming radio program mentions the need to calm traffic and to reduce speeds on some of our major arterials.
I wonder also whether the rising sun was a factor -- can't do much about that, other than to adjust one's work hours seasonally.

Tom's crash occurred at the intersection of Montezuma Rd and
Collwood. He was east-bound on his way to work up Montezuma from the
Normal Heights area. He had been a regular bicycle commuter, but I'm
told that he has since given up bicycling in car traffic.
I don't know exactly where he was struck, whether:
in the straight-through bike lane between the RTOL and straight through lanes,
in the side of the road bike lane approaching the RTOL,
somewhere between the end of the shoulder-side bike lane and the
straight-through bike lane,
in the shoulder of the RTOL,
or somewhere else.
In any case to often bicycling in presence of bike lanes at an
intersection ain't easy.
