[SDCBC] Pulled over for "taking the lane"

Hi Mary,
Yes, 21202 (a) (3) clearly obviates the requirement of you "riding as close
as practicable to the right" when the lane is "too narrow for a bicycle and
a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane", or simply to avoid
conditions (like potentially suddenly opening doors - crashes with which
have been known to be fatal) that "make it unsafe to continue along the
right".
I think that most people, including most police officers, sincerely believe
that it is inherently dangerous to ride where you were riding. Such a
belief can justify (politely) intimidating cyclists like this in the mind of
such an officer. After all, he probably believes he was doing it for your
own good.
On the other hand, about a year ago I was honked at angrily by a driver for
taking the lane while approaching and crossing an intersection (with my
daughter in tow on a Burley Piccolo trailercycle). What he didn't notice
was that the car behind him was a SD police car. In that case, the honking
driver was pulled over and got the "cyclists have the same rights to be in
the road as you" lecture.
Did you happen to get the officer's name and/or badge number? A friendly
inquiry from the coalition, and/or your councilman's office, might be in
order.
