Subject: [SDCBC] Bicyclist killed in Mira Mesa

 

I've been following this unfortunate story since it occurred since I
lived in Mira Mesa at one time and rode a ten mile circuit on the
streets many a night.  There is a real need to get night bike safety
info to the parts of the county that have heavy immigrant populations.
I can't tell you how many times in Escondido at night that I have caught
movement out of the corner of my eye as I drove along that turned out to
be an unlit bicyclist whizzing by the car.  I had gone by before I knew
they were there.  Because I'm a cyclist I have a great deal of empathy
for bicyclists.  When I'm around them in a car I take responsibility not
to damage them.  But I wonder how many people are hit on bicycles in the
county that do not turn up as fatalities that are in a similar
situation?  Being older, I do my riding almost always in the day because
of this very issue (Midnight Madness in San Diego being the exception).
I don't want to get killed by a situation that is totally preventable
(running a red light at night on an unlit bike, WOW, even typing that
sent up a chill).  -- Lee
