The fork is best protected in 3 ways:
1. Wrap it in pipe insulation. You can buy pipe insulation at a
hardware store. Get pieces that are think enough for the fork (get pieces
for the bikes main tubes and pierces for the stays as well) cut them to fit
the fork length, and tape them on. Some of this insulation is quite think.
It lasts for years, mine has been used for many transports.
2. Secure it with your Skewer. Remove the skewer from the front hub and
insert exactly where is normally goes, but without the wheel.
3. Stuff it! Stuff items between the 2 prongs. Water bottles work well,
rags, etc.
Pack around the bike items of clothing, in cloth or plastic bags, to secure
the bike from contact with the inside of the bike box while being handled.
It makes your luggage lighter as well!
Also, zip tie your rear derailleur onto the chain stay. Don't allow it to
flop away from the bike.
Do not put away any tool you used to prep your bike, you will probably need
that tool at the other end to put the bike back together again!

Subject: [SDCBC] Advice on shipping a bike?
Hi SDCBCers -
My brother-in-law is visiting in November from New York and flying in with
his bike. He's nervous about the carbon fiber fork (the rest of the bike is
steel). He plans to have a local NY bike shop pack the bike for him in a
hard-sided case, and I'm trying to convince him the fork should be just fine
in that.
Any advice from those who have flown bikes? Would he be better off packing
the fork in his carry-on luggage (assuming he could get it through
security)?
Thanks!
