your editorial of 30 May

Dear Mr. Dillow,

I read your "Cars and Bicycles Shouldn't Compete" editorial with interest and offer the following counterpoint in a constructive and civil fashion.

First, I am not a munchkin, and my bicycles are not baby strollers. I am a 56-year-old tax-paying high-technology executive with two advanced degrees and 100,000 cumulative road miles of lawful and assertively defensive bicycling experience. My elder son, a former munchkin who is about to graduate with honors at UCSD and who will soon be pursuing a PhD in nuclear physics, sometimes rides with me.

Second, I am a politically centrist/mainstream American citizen who firmly believes that our "unalienable rights" include the fundamental right to mobility, i.e., to move freely, efficiently, and reasonably safely from Point A to Point B, under our own power.

Third, I live in north coastal San Diego, which lacks the nicely interconnected grid of 25-35mph roads we see in the coastal plains of central and west Los Angeles or parts of Orange County. I simply cannot commute the 7-8 miles between home and work without using roads with 45-55mph posted speed limits.

Fourth, I am well aware of the dangers of interacting with motor vehicle traffic, and I do everything I can to mitigate them, including lobbying for strict individual accountability for every road user. I am equally aware of the grave dangers posed by obesity and physical sloth and inactivity and of the tremendous physical, mental, and emotional benefits I derive from cycling. (Try it; you might like it.)

All the best,

John
