[SDCBC] Genesee Avenue widening

Hi Jerry,

The lanes will be a part of the final project, but as with many construction
projects, they are not able to keep the road width during construction.
There will be signage for a 'bike alternate' and a slower speed limit due to
the construction, but I think that's about it. Bicyclists will probably have
to take the lane through the construction area when they want to get
through.

Be careful out there!

Kathy

June 26,

Hi Kathy,

I would like to bring to SDCBC's attention an article in today's
Union-Tribune, June 26, 2007, section B, page B2, end of column 2, which
states that the section of Genesee Avenue just south of Interstate 5 will be
widened from 4 to 6 lanes(see below).

I ride north on the Genesee Avenue bike lane and take I5 to the Sorrento
Valley exit where I board the north-bound Coaster. And I use the 'south'
bound Genesse Avenue bike lane coming down the hill from North Torrey Pines
Road, over I5 proceeding up to the University City area.

I hope that the road planners have taken the existing bike lanes into
account with the explicit intent of maintaining or improving them, and that
the contractor is required to provide safe bike lanes for riders during the
construction project.

Sincerely,

Jerry Fitzsimmons

Project begins to widen part of Genesee Avenue

SAN DIEGO: A section of Genesee Avenue that's often choked with traffic will
be widened under a $4.1 million project started yesterday.

The project, scheduled to be completed in August 2008, will widen Genesee to
six lanes from four between Campus Point Drive and Interstate 5, a distance
of about half a mile in the San Diego community of University City. Plans
also call for new medians and sidewalks as well as a southbound right-turn
lane at Campus Point.

The work is being paid for with city Facilities Benefit Assessment funds
collected from developers. -C.B.
