[SDCBC] Gilman and I-5

Thanks to Jennifer Davies who called the city and asked them to get the
police out to ticket auto drivers making the illegal right turn from the
through lane on Gilman! They wrote a bunch of tickets, and hopefully that
will discourage folks from doing it. It's also encouraging that Caltrans is
getting ready to start the ramp project this fall - I need to check with Bob
James to see if this project will also include putting in the signal at the
intersection.

Hi Andrea:

Wow, you got a much faster response than I did.  Thank you so much for
notifying the police department.  Since you sent me this email, the police
conducted a major traffic sweep on May 31st and have come back with one
officer at least one other time.  Below is the list of citations that were
issued on May 31st.

By issuing at least 14 citations in the span of one hour, this has helped
deter other drivers from making the illegal right turn.  I also received an
email from Fred Goossens from the City of San Diego,

Transportation Engineering Division telling me that Caltrans told him that
they were going to begin a project on the ramp in the Fall of 2007 to widen
the ramp.  So, things are looking up and soon it will be a lot safer to be a
bicyclist or a driver making a left turn onto the ramp.
