i, too, heartily endorse gmap-pedometer as a great way to map out
routes. i have even managed to download routes clicked in there to my
gps and follow them (ask me how!). routes you click in are publicly
accessible but you have to publicize them yourself.

another google maps-based tool (that i haven't used) is bikely.com. it
is dedicated specifically to sharing bike routes and is searchable:
