I did not mean to imply "that there really is no hazard for bicyclists". My
point was that for bicyclists who take a lane-controlling position in the
center of the lane at a given speed, the hazard is comparable to that
assumed by motorcyclists taking a similar position at a similar speed.
"Safe" is a relative and very subjective term. But if you think it's an
"unsafe" intersection for motorcyclists, then it's "unsafe" for bicyclists
too.

Waiting that long might also explain why motorists approaching from behind
might not have sufficient time to deal with the cyclist's sudden presence
reasonably (and why they might swerve into the center median to pass).
Effective lane-control often requires early lane-control.
