[SDCBC] Gilman / I-5 interchange

I stand corrected. The intersection could be squared off further, although I
think it is already as close to squared off as Caltrans will allow.
I'd be curious to see those statistics, John. The only data I have readily
available is for 2000-2001, which shows zero bike crashes at that
intersection (but three at Gilman/La Jolla Village Drive), and 2004-2005,
which shows 4 crashes on Gilman (LJ Village, LJ Colony, Villa La Jolla, and
Evening Way, but none at the I-5).
I'm having a hard time figuring out what is making Gilman so dangerous
compared to La Jolla Village Drive, Genesee, etc. The lack of traffic signal
is certainly a problem, but other than that, I'm stymied as to what to do to
make that particular intersection better.

No, Kathy, the intersection is NOT adequately squared off. The only way to
render it safe for bicyclists (and don't forget pedestrians, who have it
even worse than we do) is to tighten the curve radius, to force motorists to
slow down. This is a dangerously bicyclist and pedestrian hostile
intersection, and the collision statistics support my contention.
Serge, with all due respect, I reject your statement to the effect that
there really is no hazard for bicyclists here because motorcyclists don't
object to the interesection. I know you and I differ on this, but I don't
perceive motorcycling to be a particularly safe activity.

I agree with Gene on this one. The interchange is already pretty well
squared off. The 'Caltrans improvements' were mostly implemented (except the
installation of a stop light, which we're still waiting for.) Before the
bike lane was to the left of the right turn only lanes, it was to the right
of the right turn only lanes. They're making incremental progress.
You might be able to remove the bike lane all together, but I seriously
doubt you will be able to get the traffic down to 25 mph on that hill with
that amount of traffic and no side friction.
