I agree there is no perfect solution and I am not sure that a stop light is
the right answer either. I think the problem is really that the break in the
striping that allows west/north bound drivers on Gilman to turn left, lulls
south bound motorists on Gilman into thinking they can make that right turn
across the bike lane.
I do think that a 25mph speed limit, two right turn lanes and a traffic light
might be a workable solution. The traffic light could prevent people from
making that right turn and would resolve the issue people going the otherway who
need to turn left onto i-5 south.
It might be that a big NO RIGHT TURN on the embankment is the best solution.
Myself, I ride somewhat to the left of the center of the lane to avoid
getting right hooked by a motorist driving around me into the meridian.
And while we are discussing this interchange, there are two more issues that
ought to be addressed:
1. There no bike path signs indicating the entrance to the Rose Canyon Bike
path. Such signs not only let cyclists know that there is a path but they also
alert motorists to the fact that cyclists maybe entering or exiting the road
way.
2. There is no "vehicular" way to enter the Rose Canyon Bike Path from La
Colony Drive. One can play the role of a pedestrian and push the button and
wait. Otherwise the options seem to be to make a left from the left lane against
the light or to cross over some where further up the road and take the
sidewalk.
