A nice article in the San Diego Union Tribune about the bike lane on Texas
Street we've been complaining about. Kudos to Ray Ramage for contacting the
UT and getting the City to finally DO something!

Sharing road now easier after city repaints line

THE PROBLEM: Riding a bicycle downhill into Mission Valley on Texas Street
is not for the faint of heart, especially before the sun rises.

Before a bout of tendinitis hit him, Ray Ramage made the descent about 5:45
a.m. most weekdays on an hourlong commute from his University Heights home
to Scripps Ranch High School, where he is a long-term substitute teacher.

A year ago, Ramage was thrilled when the city of San Diego repaved the
one-lane section of Texas Street. But after the asphalt dried, he said,
workers painted a white line down the road's right-hand side that wasn't
wide enough to safely separate cars from bikes. His complaints went nowhere.

Ramage said he had many close calls on his mountain bike. There's a concrete
barrier down the middle of the roadway, leaving motorists little room to
swerve around cyclists.

One recent morning, Ramage said, a driver “tailgated me at 40 mph all the
way down the hill to the freeway. As a parting shot, he cursed me roundly.”



STATUS: Just Fix It contacted Mohammad Sammak, deputy director of San
Diego's Street Division, on Tuesday. By Thursday morning, the roadway had
been restriped. Workers also righted a bike lane sign that had been pushed
over.
