[SDCBC] FW: Plastic Cones in Bike Lane

For me, the issue is simply my intolerance of an illegal and completely unnecessary obstruction (and potential hazard for the admittedly unwary) in an established Class II bike lane on a fairly fast, heavily traveled road. It has nothing to do with vehicular breakdowns, potholes, police stops, etc. or my ability to deal safely with them.

By the way, through downtown Encinitas, where the Highway 101 speed limit is 30mph instead of 45 or 50, I am glad there are no Class II bike lanes. Because of the diagonal parking, I always ride vehicularly straight down the center of the #2 travel lane, accepting an occasional honk from a frustrated or clueless motorist. I actually welcome the pedestrian bumpouts in the curb, because they reduce motorists' expectation that bicyclists should hug the curb, the door zone of the parallel-parked cars, or, even worse, the back bumpers of the diagonally-parked cars.

The attitude and attention given here to some short length of bike lane being blocked for some reason amounts to acting like the bike lane is some kind of religious shrine. Indeed, to many cyclists, perhaps unconsciously, a lack of respect for a bike lane seems to be interpreted as a lack of respect for cyclists and cycling in general. Perhaps that's what this all ultimately about? I think some of us might identify with bike lanes and the space they demarcate as being "ours", and blocking like this might feel like a personal trespass.
