On Palomar Airport Road, a 6-lane 55mph prime arterial, in heavy rush hour traffic, how is riding in the bike lane any riskier than attempting to take the #3 main travel lane uphill at 15mph into the rising sun? Under this scenario, which I face every morning I bike to work, I would claim that the bike lane IS the SAFEST place to be.

... I agree bike lanes are often very safe places to be, and often certainly safe enough to ride in. I just don't know that they are ever the SAFEST place to be ...
