I think the bike lane is often a very safe place to be.  In general, I think 
cycling is a safe mode of transportation, if I thought cycling wasn't a safe 
way to get around I wouldn't do it.  Of course, whether one is in the bike lane 
or in a traffic lane, one needs to keep the old eyes open,  make sure merging 
traffic and people pulling from drive ways, parked cars etc are do not 
present a potential danger, etc. etc.

I consider myself a member of the traffic community.  Courtesy, convenience 
are not a dirty words, whether I am driving a car, a motor home or riding a 
bicycle, first comes my safety, second comes courtesy and convienence for others.
