Interesting story Jack. I hope you made a wish before picking the penny up
:)
...I have been picking up change regularly as well during my bike and
run-commutes. In the past 6 months, I have about $4.00. Not so impressive,
what is more impressive is that I also pick up batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9V,
Cell phone, etc. etc.)...of which I have a huge jar full (well over 100
batteries in the past 6 months).
The value of these new...well over $500
The value of these used and worn out...$0
Keeping these toxins out of the storm drains/ocean...priceless!
Cheers, Kevin

Subject: [SDCBC] bike story
A few people sent mail regarding my off topic story yesterday.
Here is one further off topic - happened last night on my commute
home...
Background:
I have been picking up the change I spot on the side of the road for
the past year. I am almost to the anniversary, so will find out what
one year of picking up change will yield. I have no idea where I am
at, but I have an entire jar of change, including a few dollar bills.
Some days I get zero, other days a few pennies, other days a few
dollars. After a year, one would think I would detect a pattern, but
no such luck. And I can ride a route that I haven't ridden in a month,
and find nothing; ride a route that I rode yesterday and find a handful
of change that wasn't there the day before. (The most I ever found on
a single day was $145, but that wasn't in this calendar year.)
And the story:
I was riding EB across Miramar Rd. on my way home, I spot a penny.
No big deal, but this was around the middle, south side, across from
the Hertz or so. There is zero walking traffic through here, only
cars and bicycles. When I spotted the penny, it looked a little odd,
but I just shook my head - couldn't be.
I stopped, rolled backwards (after a year, I am pretty good and quick
at this, and it is harder than it looks) and came up to the penny.
I looked at it, struck with awe. I almost pulled my camera phone and
took a picture, but figured if someone didn't believe me, they wouldn't
believe the picture either.
It was sitting near the white bike lane stripe, gleaming in the
setting sun, *balanced on edge*.
I almost felt guilty, it looked so perfect, but picked it up and
rode on. That made 47 cents for the day, but a story for life.
Now I have seen everything.
Ride safe,
jack
