Last Wednesday, Rick Wiseman of Poway wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Poway Chieftain regarding the ongoing roadwork on Pomerado Road in front of Pomerado Hospital. Apparently the City of Poway ( aka The Peoples Republic of Poway buy many disgruntled citizens) is sacrificing the bike lanes to add a nice landscaped median on Pomerado.
I haven't verified this information myself with the city, but considering some other "designs" that have been done lately in Poway, I wouldn't be surprised. On Midland Road, immediately in front of the newly rebuilt Midland School, the bike lanes were removed to accommodate a school bus turnout lane. Seems like a particularly bad spot, what with children bicycling to school now being forced into the traffic lanes. Of course, children in Poway don't bicycle to school because Mom drops them off in her SUV.
And of course, we have the previously documented bike lane on a side walk in the Community Park area.
Poway used to be very bicycle friendly, but these last three moves makes me think the city council would like to get rid of bicycles on the streets in order to improve the "Image" of Poway (see recent articles about the twirling sign controversy)
If anyone has more information on the Pomerado Road changes, I would be interested in hearing from them. Perhaps a nice visit to a city council meeting may be in order.
