Few people know their way around San Diego County roads aboard a bike 
better than Encinitas' John Howard. A three-time Olympian, Howard 
coaches cyclists and rides an estimated 9,000 miles a year. Howard 
offers his tips for bicycle safety.

First and foremost, said Howard, wear a helmet.

Next, Howard suggests taking a bicycle safety course. The San Diego 
County Bicycle Coalition offers free courses. The next one begins 9 
a.m. April 28 at Grossmont Community College. The three-hour classes 
meet on three consecutive Saturdays. For more information, log on to
