I pedal I-67 past this location 6-10 times per year. While we can only
assume what the intent of the cyclist was, we can take into consideration
the characteristics of roads in the area.
Poway Road is not very cyclist friendly. There is virtually no bicycle lane
east or west bound from I-67 to the built up area of Poway. A cyclist would
have to take the lane for several miles on Poway Road in either direction. A
cyclist familiar with the roads into Poway from I-67 would most certainly
take Scripps Poway Parkway which joins onto I-67 about a mile or so farther
South (the direction the cyclist was coming from, the intersection he
crossed before Poway road.) SPP has a wide and very easy to navigate bicycle
lane. This leads me to believe the cyclist was attempting a u-turn to go
back in the direction of his reported home, Lakeside via south bound I-67.
My recollection is that I-67 has 2 lanes North bound at this intersection
(maybe 3, certainly not 1) and one (possibly two) lane for the left hand
turn. Traffic is normally going much faster than the 50 MPH posted. I-67
also has a higher number of high profile vehicles due to the occupations and
recreation preferences of the typical users of I-67. It is possible that the
cyclist did not see the vehicle in the left hand motor vehicle lane due to
the large motor vehicles in the right motor vehicle lane.
I-67 has a higher frequency of accidents than other roads of similar traffic
volume in San Diego.
One of our Cyclo-Vet members, Buzz Burnett posted the following regarding
Marc Carpenter, SDBC member, on our news list this evening. It was reported
that he was wearing an SDBC jersey at the time of the collision.

This is exactly the scenario I was talking about. If the situation was how
it usually is, cars are parked in the northbound shoulder, and cyclists ride
in the right hand lane. Sounds like he was either riding in the right lane
or moving over to get into the left turn lane (which is what I think the
officer was trying to say) to get onto Poway Road. Either way, sounds like
they don't quite know what's going on - 'in the right lane or shoulder'?
'veered to the left' ?
The conditions yesterday were terrific for visibility - clear and sunny. The
sun would be toward the west, so not in anyone's eyes. Looks to me like
either the driver of the car wasn't paying attention to what was happening
in front of them, and/or was speeding (not uncommon on this stretch of
roadway), or the bicyclist didn't see the car or misjudged the speed of the
car coming from behind. I wonder what the other witnesses saw? There should
have been plenty of them - it's a very busy intersection, especially on a
Friday afternoon.
The north to west turn is indeed as difficult as it looks on the map. The
speed limit is at least 50 mph.

from the U-T website
Although the account reads as though the cyclist were attempting a U-turn
followed by a right, rather than a simple vehicular left turn, I strongly
suspect the latter is the case. (More sloppy journalism, e.g., which
direction was Jeannie Franklin riding in Solana Beach?) I have to plead
total unfamiliarity with this intersection, but the Mapquest aerial photo
makes it appear signalized. Does anyone know the speed limit through here?
Is this north-to-west left turn as difficult as it looks on the map?

POWAY: A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a car yesterday on state
Route 67 at Poway Road during rush hour.
<http://www.signonsandiego.com/images/t.gif>
The cyclist was identified by the county Medical Examiner's Office as
attorney Marc Carpenter, 46, of Lakeside.
Sheriff's officials said the accident occurred about 5:10 p.m. a short
distance south of the "T" intersection.
Carpenter was pedaling north on Route 67 in the right lane or shoulder and
veered into the left lane, trying to reach the right-turn lane onto
westbound Poway Road, sheriff's Sgt. Lloyd Muenzer said.
Muenzer said Carpenter collided with a Nissan Sentra in the left lane, also
going north. The impact knocked Carpenter onto the roof and windshield of
the car, then onto the pavement north of the intersection. He was declared
dead at the scene.
