As one who has riden this stretch of road numerous times in the early
morning hours, and as a member of the victim's general age bracket, this
news understandably unsettles me somewhat:

CARLSBAD - A bicyclist is facing the possible amputation of his leg after he
was hit by a pickup yesterday morning, Carlsbad police said.

The 61-year-old rider was northbound on Carlsbad Boulevard north of Palomar
Airport Road at 6:45 a.m. when a Ford F-150 swerved into the bicycle lane,
police said.

The driver, a 45-year-old Encinitas man, was not arrested. The crash is
under investigation.
