From execdir at sdcbc.org Mon Dec 3 22:09:18 2007 From: execdir at sdcbc.org (Kathy Keehan) Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2007 19:09:18 -0800 Subject: [SDCBC-announce] Announcements for December 3, 2007 - New Pavement, Ride and Learn, and message from the League of American Bicyclists Message-ID: <000d01c83623$0f6df9c0$2e49ed40$@org> SDCBC Announcements for December 3, 2007 - New Pavement, Ride and Learn, and message from the League of American Bicyclists Sorrento Valley Road Repaved - Caltrans repaved the section of Sorrento Valley Road under the new freeway ramps. Where there was once dirt is now asphalt! Just in time for the rainy season. Thanks Caltrans! Speaking of new pavement - Fashion Valley Road also has a new coating of asphalt thanks to the efforts of Coalition member Richard Wood. Way to go, Richard! If you have a pavement issue in the City of San Diego, please help us get it fixed. First, call the City hotline (619) 527-7500 and report the hazard. Second, send us a picture of the problem so we can post it on our website. Third, let us know when and if the city takes care of the problem. Ride and Learn, December 9th. We will meet at 9:00 in the parking lot of Action Cyclery, 9910-C Mira Mesa Blvd, SD 92131. We will ride up to Miramar Lake, around the Lake and back to Action Cyclery, about 8 miles total. If you don't want to ride UP the hill to the lake, you may opt to meet us between 9:15 and 9:30 in the parking lot near the restrooms at the Lake. This will be our FIRST ride all the way around the Lake since it has been re-opened. Some of us might even want to go around twice :-) It is about 5 miles around the lake. Don't miss this lovely ride. As always, feel free to invite neighbors, friends, family, etc.........all are welcome. There might even be some donuts and coffee involved!!! And from the League of American Bicyclists - A reporter for a national magazine is searching for people with diabetes (type II) that have found cycling as a source of exercise. He's looking to interview people who have started or re-discovered the sport and continue to ride regularly. Any age, male/female and anywhere in the country is fine. Ideally, the people (you or your friends?) have also found that they reap other benefits from cycling, such as weight loss. He wants to speak with you for a few minutes or swap questions through email. Let us know if you fit the bill --- email us at Elizabeth at bikeleague.org or call at 202-822-1333 x215. We need to hear from you by Dec. 7 --- the deadline is coming up quickly! And on a personal note - we're still experimenting with this list. This is the first shot at a message format for the 'announcements' list, so feel free to send feedback to me. Should we include graphics and pictures? Plain text? Once a week (or so.) for a message ok, or would you rather have individual messages spread out over a few days? Let me know. Bikes for Kids Thanks to Trek and BIA - through the generosity of Trek and the Building Industry Association, kids who lost their bikes in the fires will be getting new ones! Trek has donated 100 bikes to families in San Diego, and The Building Industry Association will be donating almost 200 bikes for kids in the County. Big thanks to BIA, Trek, and Gary Cooper (Rancho Bernardo Cyclery) and Mike Olson (San Diego Trek stores). Good Press for Bikes - The Union Tribune ran two bike friendly opinion pieces this week. The first, a column by Neal Peirce ( http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071213/news_lz1e13peirce.html) is a good discussion of why streets that accommodate all users are a good idea. The second was a letter to the editor from executive director Kathy Keehan in response to several letters about the fatal crash in Carmel Valley several weeks ago ( http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071213/news_lz2e13letters.html) >From Our 'Random Idea' Department - An interesting idea to motivate students to ride to school http://www.freiker.org/site/wiki/Home Coalition Office Closed for the Holiday - This will be the last 'Quick Release' for the year.
